I have mixed views on Cyprus ( and Malta) as a holiday destination given their propensity to catch/ blast our songbirds and turtle doves .There appears little control but must be some as Cypriots are reported as going to North Africa to shoot the doves.

interesting Steve. Where to bird abroad is always a dilemma and a personal choice (which I'm not proposing to debate). I used to 'boycott' a lot. But now deliberately go to some places to spend my birding dollar: folk who used to poach birds can become keen conservationists if they earn over and over showing a bird.
re turtle doves, some would argue we in the UK have done much more to reduce Turtle dove populations - research shows that, in short, they can't raise enough young to sustain a UK population as farming practices leave them nothing to eat. You can still hear lots of purring turtle doves in Cyprus despite the appalling massacre. Cos there's habitat. I cannot understand 'shooting' - but I know my own lifestyle is more a threat to birds than that. A real personal challenge. It all just seems so complicated at times!

I agree Mick it's a tricky one and purely down to personal choice. If we avoided everywhere that persecution takes place, of people as well as birds, as well as countries whose politics we disagree with then we wouldn't go anywhere. In fact birding in Yorkshire might become questionable!

Like Steve I won't go to Malta or Cyprus now yet do go to Spain with some regularity, and their record on bird shooting/trapping isn't exactly pristine. Tough choices.

Undecided
