Why HBW needs to act for conservation

I've previously lamented our approach to creating or maintaining wildlife areas. I have watched in dismay as the Ingbirchworth triangle reservoirs - once magnets for wildfowl and waders - have been ruined by ill-conceived open access and irresponsible dog-walkers. We can't turn back the clock, but we SHOULD as a club be lobbying Councils and Yorks Water to fence off (some) shoreline and also put up proper barriers where, supposedly, there is no access eg one side of Broadstones Res. Google the following for a study that shows the havoc wrought by dog walkers.
Biology Letters (doi:10.1098/rsbl.2007.0374). 'Four-legged friend or foe? Dog walking displaces native birds from natural areas' by Peter B. Banks and Jessica V. Bryant

After this mornings bad experience with two dogs and owners around Broadstones Res, I was actually thinking of writing to Yorkshire Water and letting them know about the situation around Broadstones/Ingbirchworth and the irresponsible dog owners (reading lessons would be a start lol) and of course the mess it's like krypton factor walking around there.
I did notice this morning Mick after reading the sign at Broadstones that there was no access along the far bank only to look up and see somebody walking along that bank.
So yes something has to be done for the birds whether its fences or bans during breeding season we need, as you say, to start lobbying as a group and individuals

what we'll need to do is come up with something positive - Council's and Utilities Companies have to manage the tension between statutory obligations re eg right to roam/open access etc with opposite 'responsibilities' to wildlife. but they will need help to understand the damage being done, backed up with local and wider research or info (as in article) in order to make the case. and maybe some free labour if they provide eg fences. No-one will spend money on fences etc just so a few birders can see more birds! and they won't be able to police the area. still HBW has a conservation role - can I ask if the conservation liaison officer can set up a meeting between us and YW and Barnsley council? I understand the YW rep is already known to us. I am happy to attend tho I am no scientist and might be working mega hours again soon.

Sorry that no "formal" reply has been posted previously.
We (through the conservation officer, Mike Denton) are currently trying to set up a meeting with the appropriate person within YW. As always with such organisations identifying who the specific individual with the appropriate authority can be tricky as posts change with some regularity; this will not deter us but it may slow us down. As everyone will appreciate HBC doesn't carry enormous clout with YW but we must raise the issues as vigorously as we can in order to maintain some influence over thinking. We do have good contacts with local authority environmental officers in Kirklees so it is a little unfortunate that the area with whcih we are concerned happens to be in Barnsley.
It is a shame that such as YW don't have local consultative bodies on which such as HBC could be represented.
Please continue posting on this and similar topics. It is only by understanding the views of the members that we can direct our energies in the best directions.

Interesting stuff.
All it needs is some sort of implementation; notices at the various waters might help I suppose.

I was stood on the banks of Ingbirchworth Res this morning at 6:30 enjoying the view when once again I was harrased by a dog and was wondering was it all worth it, making complaints to the governing bodies, getting up early to arrive for 5:30, to see and look for a bird I've already seen seen and seen this year only to be confronted once again by a dog on the local sites. Then I awoke and saw the positive I had seen new area birds, I had seen and heard an array of common birds for the site as they went about doing what they do, I had seen the dog and owner get stuck in the mud as they ventured in to places they shouldn't have been going (no harm came to either) , I had seen the sunrise to boot , I went away with a smile thinking you bet it was worth it and I even got to work on time
