The Kirklees Cuckoo
Kirklees Culture Declares Emergency is a local group of arts and culture organisations who collaborate in raising awareness of the climate and ecological emergency. Part of the global movement
https://www.culturedeclares.orgWith support from Our Biennale (
https://evokekirklees.org/biennale/) and Kirklees Museums, we've been working on a big public artwork to draw attention to the slow decline and risk of extinction threatening the Cuckoo. The Kirklees Cuckoo will be 20m x 20m image (see below) and is part of a world-wide project called withNature2020, led by an artist in Copenhagen called Emma Thomas
http://www.emmakthomas.com/withnature2020/ People across the globe will be creating outdoor images of many different endangered species of bird, mammal, reptile, fish, and insect - all on 22 May, the International Day for Biological Diversity. All images will be assembled on the ground as a collage of donated items of clothing, and all finished images will be filmed and live-streamed on YouTube.
From a shortlist of endangered species provided by Mike Denton (President, Huddersfield Birdwatchers Club) the Cuckoo was selected and drawn by young artists at The Children's Art School, Holmfirth
https://thechildrensartschool.co.uk/kirklees-cuckoo-a-withnature2020-project/. Their drawing will be our template, and the big image will be laid-out using donated items of unwanted clothing at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Stirley Community Farm on 22 May.
