Fascinated to come across a Farrow & Ball “ Colour by Nature” chart produced in collaboration with the Natural History Museum. Based on the 1814 publication of Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours which Darwin took with him on HMS Beagle.
Colours are named and given an animal, vegetable and mineral comparator.
e.g. Snow White is : Breast of black headed  gull, snowdrop, carafa marble and cale sinter.

just birds
Ash Grey : Breast of long tailed hen titmouse
Orange coloured white : Breadt of White or Screech Owl
Duck Green: neck of mallard
Dutch Orange: crest of Golden crested wren
Deep Reddish Brown : Breast of  Pochard and Neck of Teal drake
Scotch Blue : Throat of Blue Titmouse
Emerald Green: Beauty spot on wing of Teal drake
Broccoli Brown: Head of Black headed Gull
Some colour names are compared to butterfly wings.
