Hiya. I'm trying to piece together the status of Marsh Tit in areas bordering Sheffield and was wondering what the historical and the current situation is for Huddersfield?

I'm surprised that no-one has responded to this so far.

Copies of the Annual Bird reports of the club can be found and downloaded freely on the main web site: http://www.huddersfieldbirdwatchersclub.co.uk/#/annual-reports/4559882266

The most authoritative treatment of this and other information can be found in the excellent "The Birds of the Huddersfield Area" by Paul and Betty Bray.

Thanks Alf, hadn't noticed the annual reports were up on this site. Plenty of reading! Thanks again.

Actually probably not that much reading!

2010

MARSH TIT Poecile palustris
Rare visitor.
A report of two birds within a roving tit flock in Menagerie Wood, Bretton Park on 5th March
(DT) constitutes the first record in the Club area since 1989.

And nothing in the '87 -'92 Atlas.

Anything post 2011 perchance?

Well, perhaps unsurprisingly for this species, there are a few points of confusion;

From 1974 report

'A scarce species that has never been proved to breed in the area'

From 1975 report
'Whilst this species formerly bred in theĀ  north-east of the area, before the period under consideration, its present status seems to be a rare visitor'

From 1978 report

'The recorder suspects he rather too easily accepted some of the submitted records in past years. Full descriptions will be required in future'.

I don't have a copy of "The Birds of the Huddersfield Area"; should anyone wish to take the trouble to scan or photograph the relevant data and post on here thanks a million in advance.

Interestingly, there's a 1985 record in the Brays' book that's not mentioned in that year's Report. It's of one in Honley Old Wood on 8th January.

The book also mentions a few records from the 30s and 40s - mostly of ones and twos at Bretton Park, Haigh Wood, and Deep Haigh (NE of High Hoyland), but also including 'a large number' at the latter site on 28/12/40, and '4 or 5' there on 25/08/45.

On the other hand, a few of the earlier records from the list above aren't mentioned at all.

James, I scanned the page from the book but you can't post attachments in this section so I've put it in the Off Topic bit.
