I'd be surprised if it were tawny - wings too long I think and head too small. to me it looks like one of the eareds - but so hard to tell - hence Alf's comment. the more i look the more confused. it seems to have relatively long wings of seo but head and tail respectively q big and q short for that species ie more like a LEO! Let's not start a hybrid theory tho. so i'm changing my mind and wavering to LEO but maybe Dave T is right - unidentifiable?

Short-eared, based on relatively long narrow pointed wings. But you can never trust shape from a single photo.

I think it is time to reveal all as I have let you deliberate enough, the correct  answer is a male Short-eared Owl to be precise which I saw and photographed a couple of years ago in a local moorland clough.

I will post a few more images of both male and female in flight in the gallery, which will hopefully identify a few subtle differences in their respective plumages.

I hope you don't mind and thanks for sticking your necks above the parapet David, Alf & Nick but  I'll keep this one going for a little bit longer.

I think this silhouette is particularly tricky if only because it is really hard to 'manufacture' a perfect likeness silhouette' if the original photo is shot with the correct exposure aperture setting etc. In this particular case some key detail is very difficult to ascertain, having said that I am not saying the correct answer is not one of the 3 answers already given!

I will try and post another silhouette of the same bird in a different profile.

Same bird but another image with the help of my son Benjamin who has basically drawn the wing tips in manually to hopefully gave you a much clearer idea of the bird species in question.

I off for a drink now so it may be tomorrow but I reveal all. I think this is worth 3 points rather than 1 for the first person to identify it correctly!
