I've heard conflicting views in recent days as to whether the Ferruginous Duck - which has been at Pugney's CP for some time - is or is not an escapee.  I've heard one report that the bird has a ring which makes it out as part of a collection, but another which suggests that it does not have a ring.  Does anyone know if a consensus has been reached on this ?

I'm fairly certain that it has been confirmed that it doesn't have a ring Phil. It has been on Birdguides consistently since it turned up and they would have clearly indicated if the bird was suggested to be carrying a ring.

There are some photos on Birdforum and probably on Surfbirds so you can also make your own mind up.

What the actual provenance of the bird is I don't know, however, and might well be open to conjecture.

Martin Garner reckons it's probably a 1st-winter. If so then that might add a bit more weight to the idea of it being a genuine vagrant.
