Had a shock this lunchtime, I was watching for the dippers outside work in Slaithwaite on the river colne when i thought i saw a black cat with very short legs and long bushy tail at the side of the river. Then it went into the river, dived and swam about for a few minutes until i lost sight of it.

Do we have these around here ? If so it's the first i have seen or am i way off the mark?.

Yes Nick, it sounds like a Mink. See the Calderdale site http://calderbirds.blogspot.com for a pic of one taken yesterday at Elland GP.

Thanks for that David, It was a bit darker coloured than the one at elland. I shall be watching for it again.

Yes I saw a pale coloured one hurl itself into the canal at Elland last year in pursuit of mallard chicks. I thought it was a ferret but was put straight by those Calderdale birders who are better informed than I.

On a brighter note one of their number confidently identified a more welcome mustelid in the river there last year. Now that would be something to see!

the hunt that used to be based near upperthong used to go after mink on occasion but not sure if that was locally, they relocated to sheffield. a hare is now a regular site between netherthong and oldfield since the dogs went.
