For anybody who maybe interested:
Saturday, 28th July 2007 10:30am

Shelley Whins and Bridle (near Huddersfield, West Yorks)
Grid Ref: SE 201110
Leader: Steve Graham - Wildlife Advisor, Shelley Conservation Group
Park sensibly on Far Bank, Shelley. There are no facilities on either site but private facilities will be available on the day. Please note that both sites contain some steep inclines and people with limited walking abilities may not be able to negotiate the sites safely. Suitable clothing, sun protection, binoculars and a packed lunch are advisable.

Meet the leader at the entrance to the Whins on Far Bank on the public
footpath which leads to Shelley Infant School. The two sites are managed
by Shelley Conservation Group and 22 species of butterfly have been
recorded on the Whins since 1997. We will be searching for a selection
of butterflies and day-flying moths including Purple Hairstreak at this
time of year. Site management and other wildlife on the two sites will
also be discussed. Weather permitting there will also be an opportunity to visit a nearby wildlife garden and view the contents of a Moth Trap.

The morning session should last approximately 2 hours. Following a lunch
break, there is the option of walking to the former Meadowlands Trust
meadows at Thunderbridge. There should be a good selection of
butterflies, moths and dragonflies on the wing here including
White-letter Hairstreak.

Obviously the event is very weather dependent.

Just some brief feedback on the above event. Following weeks and weeks of poor weather we finally had a dry, fine day just spolit by a rather cool breeze. 19 people plus myself came for the walk, a record for me. Overall we managed 15 species including 4 White-letter Hairstreaks nectaring at low level giving excellent photo opportunities. Purple hairstreaks proved more elusive but 4 of these were seen too.

I confess that I was tempted to come but put off by the weather and the breeze, assuming that the latter would spoil it. Shame, I could have been #20.  Undecided

I would be interested in any repeat sessions planned either this year or next despite my vast inexperience of butterflies. (Just like his experience of birds I hear the comment !)

Thanks for the feedback.

The events were originally arranged primarily for Shelley residents to show them what they have on 'their doorstep'. However, I have opened the butterfly event up to the Yorkshire Branch of Butterfly Conservation as well for the last 3 years and hence got a bit more interest.

I will probably be holding one again next summer and I usually do a birdsong walk around the 2 sites in April/May time too. For people who would like to learn more about birdsong etc.

For more information about Shelley Conservation Group and a small wildlife gallery (shot by myself) visit Shelley's village website at:
www.shelleytimes.org.uk and look in the 'Village Interests' section.

Unfortunately the Butterfly Walk was a complete washout on both the Saturday and then the re-scheduled time on Sunday proved no better. I will have another go next year, perhaps we will have a summer in 2009!?
